‘चार’ ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी पर तैरता हुआ द्वीप है, जबकि ‘चपोरी’ बाढ़-सम्भावित निचले नदी-तटों पर स्थित क्षेत्र है। ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के प्रवाह के कारण चार और चपोरी अपना आकार एक- दूसरे में बदलते रहते हैं। इस क्षेत्र के लोगों को मिट्टी के कटाव, बाढ़, अशिक्षा, अवैध-प्रवसन, उच्च जनसंख्या वृद्धि और उनके विरुद्ध घृणा फैलाने सहित कई समस्याओं का सामना करना पड़ रहा है।

They are used interchangeably or with a hyphen… They keep changing shapes — a char can become a chapori, or vice versa, depending on the push and pull of the Brahmaputra.According to the Assam Government record, the Char Chapori covers 3,608 km2 of the Brahmaputra basin, or 4.6% of Assam’s area.
